African Geese

African Geese have a pretty interesting backstory. They trace back to the wild Asian Swan Goose from China, and were brought into Europe in the late 1700s and then into the United States in the mid-1800s. In China, a similar type was known as the Lion Head goose, with the same general shape and coloring you'll see in today's African geese.

And yes — the name is a little confusing. Even though their roots are in Asia, the "African" name likely stuck because people used broad labels like "Guinea" for animals that were considered foreign or had an uncertain origin. Since Guinea is associated with the coast of Africa, the breed ended up with the name African Goose in a similar way.
