Red Star (ISA Brown)
Bred for one job and great at it: filling your egg basket. The Red Star is a sex-link hybrid with rich reddish-brown feathers flecked with white. They’re easy to raise, efficient on feed, and start laying around 18 to 22 weeks, then keep going through hot summers and cold snaps alike. Chicks are sexed by color at hatch (females are reddish-orange, males are white), so you can count on hens. As a hybrid, Red Stars won’t breed true and rarely go broody, so they put their energy into eggs.
